Mootools and HTML 4

Postby hendu on Thu Aug 27, 2009 7:00 pm

Is it true that MooTools requires an XHTML doctype?

Would I encounter any problems using MooTools with a HTML 4 doctype?

You can read this article why I would want to go back to HTML 4 until HTML 5 gains good support among browsers: XHTML 2 Dies a Lonely Death, Makes Room For HTML 5.

that's also what i'm worrying about in the future. it appears most of the MooTools effects require an XHTML doctype. As widespread support of HTML 5 draws near, i'm worried that shifting to HTML 5 might conjure up bugs in the MooTools stuff i do.

would anyone be kind enough to post here what would be the differences between XHTML 1.x and HTML 5, whether it be trivial or vital? Also, would we expect action from the MooTools developers when it comes to this matter?

html5 is more like xhtml than html4 so for now it's best to use xhtml 1.0 strict

also MooTools works in every properly set Doctype (for example html4, xhtml, html5...) that doesn't trigger the Quirks Mode for Details see it's Wikipedia Entry

I think that mootools will change appropriately. So I would not worry if I were you.

Mootools will definitely do something if ever HTML 5 or anything of a surprise comes along. Just like the Firefox 3.6 issue. And by the way, I think most scripts will work on documents even if they weren't xhtml 1.0

Edit: Wow. That was an old post :(

yeah, at least html5 is fine. people are already taking advantage of the canvas tags, the integration of svg tags within the html, as well as other new tags.

but what about JS5? i heard they'll implement library-like stuff in it, possibly, like classes as syntactic sugar. is it the purpose of the upcoming MooTools 2?

The fact is that if you code properly and check for multi browser support you will be fine for using either solution. If you are worried about HTML 5 support you can hurry up and wait. Unless they have some fantastic way of making IE support web standards properly, you can bet it will be another 1.5 - 2.5 years MINIMUM before html 5 is the standard for design.
