What Editor do you use when working with MooTools???

Postby RichardM on Wed Dec 02, 2009 1:43 pm

Hi,

I really like using MooTools but I hate developing in it because I just can't find a good editor providing a reasonable level of syntax hinting as I am developing. I have tried using a number of different IDE's but still not having much luck with any of them so I thought I would ask in here and see what IDE's you guys (and girls) use when working with MooTools and writing new plugins etc...I am primarily working on a mac but if it means I can get better support for MooTools development I am happy coding using a windows only IDE or possibly even linux (I use all 3 anyway).

I know JS is not the easiest thing to have supporting for example hinting on what functions are available for a given "object" due to the lack of type support in JS but it would be nice if an editor did support this.

Thanks,

Richard

if you're on a mac, use coda. someone made a mootools syntax mode in coda. but coda in itself is superb. lol it turns out even one of our regular mootoolers here named Marcello, commented on the coda syntax mode page. hahaha. go better ask him about it too! sadly though it's not freeware.. and it costs 100 dollars. :p but it is definitely a fine piece of app.

personally though i've been helping peeps here with the help of Notepad++. and frankly, the JS syntax highlighting in itself is enough for me to go around.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I did download Coda this afternoon to try it out under its trial and installed some of the MooTools 'Modes' but these seem more geared towards syntax highlighting rather than some form of code completion. It might be that I have simply not configured it correctly or something but I was hoping (albeit not holding out much hope for) some form of Code completion. So if I have my own set of MooTools Classes I could then create an instance of one of them and get code completion on functions etc of that class. Or if I create a new Element it would provide code completion for the functions I can use on that new variable. Say myDiv = new Element('div'); myDiv.(Tell me what I can use here) so that I dont have to keep checking up the right spelling of function names, or if that class / object supports that function etc. More like you would get for more structured languages like PHP, Java, C#, C++ etc...

I'm also just using Notepad++.
code highlighting is usually all I need/have...

maybe check out apatana for that? don't know but a while back it sounded promising... and how was it called Netbeans or so... but I guess that was for java/php only - don't remember though...

yeah I'm not really a help here... as I said I'm just Notepad++.

Komodo Edit (cross plattform) with a mootools plugin. Not the fastest one, though, but still faster than aptana / eclipse.

Aptana for Jscript. It can be a little slow but great Jscript editor.
